Local Conservatives Distribute Free Copy Of Propane Safety Report After Liberal Government Sends Bill For $6000
02/10/2009
Outraged over receiving an invoice for $6000, local resident and political activist Matthew McGuire is making certain his neighbours in the Ancaster neighbourhood get their hands on a free copy of Ontario's Propane Safety Review. The review conducted by the Provincial government back in the fall of 2008 after last summer's Sunrise Propane explosion is available for $12 from the Government bookstore. McGuire wanted 500 copies for each of his neighbours and but was asked to cough up $6000 plus taxes. "I was outraged when they demanded $12 for each copy. I contacted Publications Ontario, the bookstore for the government and told them I was a local resident of Ancaster. They responded that it was the Minister who sets the price and they simply take orders." McGuire, who is also the Federal Conservative Riding President for York Centre raised the topic at the association's last board meeting in January. "My fellow board members were just as outraged by my story and agreed to spend a few hundred dollars to make certain everyone in the Ancaster neighbourhood had a copy." As a community service gesture the York Centre Conservative EDA has paid the cost of copying and is distributing the document with McGuire on Tuesday February 10, 2009. Tuesday marks the six month mark since the explosion occurred August 10, 2008. "I know some people can read the report online, but this is a mixed neighbourhood of working class and middle class people. Not only is there a digital divide, there is a linguistic divide." Added McGuire who ensured his letter was translated into Italian. "Not everyone owns a computer and not everyone can read English. We are looking for a volunteer to translate the letter into Portuguese as well." McGuire wants to know why the Liberal government would charge $6000 for a report that strikes at the heart of our safety concerns. -30-
