Bob Rae Re-Writing Coalition History
Last week, he told a radio interviewer that, “there was no Coalition with the separatists.” Interviewer: “You’re saying Michael Ignatieff did not sign that document with Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe?” Bob Rae: “No, he did not. Michael Ignatieff no never did.” (AM 770 CHQR, September 3, 2009)
Here is the Coalition document calling on the Governor General to overturn the results of the 2008 election and install a Coalition government led by the Liberals. You can see Ignatieff’s signature clearly on it. The interviewer went on to quote Michael Ignatieff talking about his plans for the Coalition. Interviewer: “’Coalition if necessary, not necessarily a coalition’, didn't Michael Ignatieff say that?” Bob Rae: “No. No.”
On CTV’s Question Period on December 7, 2008, Michael Ignatieff said the following: Michael Ignatieff: “I think my position can be summarized as coalition if necessary, but not necessarily coalition.”
In fact, Ignatieff made it quite clear that he would form a Coalition government with the Bloc Québécois and NDP if it meant he got to be Prime Minister. Michael Ignatieff: “I am prepared to form a Coalition government, and to lead that government” Michael Ignatieff: “I am prepared to enter into a Coalition government with our partners” (CTV News, December 10, 2008)
Canadians won’t forget how Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals tried to overturn the results of the last election through their Coalition with the NDP and the Bloc Québécois.
